Overview

The Ritteri Anemone is also referred to as the Magnificent Anemone or Heteractis Magnificent Sea Anemone. Some aquarists still refer to it as Radianthus ritteri, but this name was recently changed to the current H. magnifica. It can grow to over three feet in diameter in the wild, although it generally does not grow larger than 1½ feet in the aquarium. Its tentacles have a long, non-tapering shape that may, on occasion, appear swollen at the tips. They can almost completely retract into the base.

This Anemone requires strong lighting combined with strong, but intermittent, water movement within the tank. It generally prefers a high point in the tank to ensure it obtains all the light it needs, but it may change locations, seeking the ideal conditions. Its strong sting can harm corals. The presence of a Clownfish, such as Amphiprion perideraion, will help it acclimate. Ritteri Anemones from different locations may serve as hosts to other clownfish, and even shrimp.

The diet should include mussel, fish, crustaceans, and frozen foods.

I have had a Ritteri for nearly 6 years now. I bought it along with a spawning pair of Clarkii Clownfish. This anemone moved around a bit for the first week in my tank and then took up residence right in the middle of my 220-gallon reef tank about halfway up on a flat outcrop of live rock. It has remained there for nearly 6 years now! It is a stunning centerpiece in my reef tank. The clowns spawn every 10 days or so and lay a very large brood of eggs about 4 inches in diameter on the rock right next to the base of the anemone. The anemone is beautiful - bright pink to purple in color with bright yellow tips. It has also grown from approximately 12-14" in diameter when fully open to 18-20". At night when the lights go out, the clowns completely disappear into it as it slowly closes and shrinks down to about 10" in diameter. I feed it a diet of chopped clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish 3-4 times a week.

I am absolutely blown away by the specimen I received from LiveAquaria. I drip acclimated it together with a Pink Skunk Clownfish I purchased at the same time. Then placed it on a rock ledge I had placed about 3/4 the way up in my take centered beneath a 250watt MH and getting strong current from both sides of the tank. Within about 3 to 5 seconds it had firmly taken hold of the rock and began to spread to an enormous size, much larger than I was expecting. The Pink Skunk has also paired with an existing Pink Skunk I already had in the system and I spent the next few hours watching both disappear inside the Ritteri. The coloration is amazing and honestly I can't tear my eyes away from the tank. Thanks very much for delivering another outstanding addition to my reef!

Received my Ritteri Anemone 3 days ago. It is a beautiful specimen and larger than I expected. Lovely tan color. My clownfish appear to have cozied up to it quite nice.

Beautiful anemone. From my recent experience with ritteri (and sebae) they can get sick very easy the first few days. They can be very sensitive. This is/was my third try (from other sites as well) to get a ritteri via 'mail order.' One I got from LA didn't make it -- not LA's fault, it's just if you read on them, they are just that susceptible to infection. LA is great with their guarantee, and I was taken care of. I have always raved about LA's cust service. Anyhow, this one I got crossing fingers. Came in beautiful even in the bag. First hurdle was the first week. Looked great. Next one is the one month mark (now!). Looks great!. I wish I can send a pic in. Though if you look on my youtube channel. Search for Lance Umansky :) ... you'll see it there! lol. The percs I have will never leave the nem. Truly mesmerizing to watch. *Mine loves a lot of light*. Mine will move if not at high intensity light. I was worried about burning it. I still let it adapt to high light, even though it was moving there on its own. No signs of light sensitivity at all. Keep it so the tentacles do not touch a surface nearby (like the side of the tank) or it will likely move over there, even if the foot is far away. Just some tips there that I learned. And keep your PH's with a sponge on them in case. This was one of the best purchases I have made for my hobby in my many years (35 in the hobby off and on, more on than off). Just be prepared, because you do need adequate experience, it is not a beginner 'nem. Though I don't call myself an expert either. PS I got this site unseesn (not from Divers Den, though it might as well have been!).
