Overview
The Burmese Upside Down Catfish Mystus leucophasus is an African Catfish in the Claroteidae family and has an easy care level. In nature, it can be found in rivers and lakes from Africa to Asia.
In an eye-catching all black color, it will hang in an inverted position. Although it will swim right side up, it spends most of its life swimming upside down. In nature this behavior allows its mouth to skim the water for insects, crustaceans, and smaller fish. In an aquarium environment, they supplement the food they are fed with algae they find on décor and plants.
Growing to as large as 10”, it requires an aquarium environment of 50 gallons or more with water temperatures of 75-82°F, a KH range of 4-12 and pH levels of 6.0-7.5. The freshwater aquarium should be well planted and have plenty of hiding places. When deciding on tankmates for the Burmese Upside Down Catfish, look for similar sized fish that are not aggressive.
Breeding of the Burmese Upside Down Catfish in the aquarium is difficult.
This freshwater fish is an omnivore that should be offered sinking Catfish pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex, plus a quality flake food.
