Overview

The Blue Velvet Damselfish , also known as the Japanese Damselfish or the Blue-Streak Devil, is black with small blue stripes and one large white vertical stripe. As it matures, it may lose some of its coloring, fading towards brown and black.

It will do well in a 30 gallon or larger aquarium. It is aggressive toward other fish and prone to disease if proper aquarium management techniques are not practiced.

The Blue Velvet Damselfish feeds on a variety of meaty items, herbivore preparations, and flaked foods.

Approximate Purchase Size: Small: 1/2" to 1-1/4"; Medium: 1-1/4" to 1-3/4"; Large: 1-3/4" to 2 -1/2"

Customer Testimonials

This species with its electric blue stripes is exceedingly beautiful, but don't let its delicate looks fool you. It is quite ferocious. It is extremely aggressive and will torment other damels or shy fish to the point of extreme stress or even death. It is very hardy, and best suited to a tank with other fish that can hold their own. I advise against housing it with other damsels or clownfish. I had to remove one from my tank after it badgered just about every fish with its territorial antics. However, given an environment with larger non-docile fish, it is one of the prettiest and hardiest fish for the home aquarium.

The Blue Velvet Damselfish is a very hardy fish. I have had tank die offs and this fish was the only one who lived. The down side is that this fish is very aggressive and fears nothing, even larger fish. He does not bother crabs, cleaner shrimp, or starfish though. It is best to keep Blue Velvet Damselfish by themselves. I used mine to cycle two tanks. Good healthy fish.

Very hardy, quick, and aggressive but it really is quite pretty. The one that I have is the best of friends with my clownfish, but any other fish that I try to add has died because of it. So I only have 2 fish in my 30 gallon. It's good crabs and snails though.
